It was wednesday, the phone rang. The SPACA (local dog shelter) rang me. They just pulled what they thought was a basset ... could I go take a look? Thursday morning, opening time, I was there and YES, it was a basset hound. VERY thin - you could count the bones without even touching him! |
Nash is 10 years old, was picked up by the police for loitering, somewhere near Cannes, and taken to the dog pound. After 3 weeks the pound were unsuccessful in finding his owners and his time was up. A girl working at the pound felt sorry for him and contacted the SPACA. Could they take him in? (The SPACA is a privately run no-kill shelter). They had room and went down the same day to pick him up. Nash was due to be put down the next day, thursday! They pulled Nash and his vagabond companion (possibly Leonberg/Pyrenean Mountain dog). Needless to say I fell in love with Nash AND his friend and went back the next day armed with biscuits for the pair of them. Did Nash recognise me ... or the biscuits ??? Anyway, I contacted our organisation Un Coeur Sous l'Oreille and when I got back from the shelter on Friday a home had been found for Nash - the other side of France!!! We had to organise a relay to get him to his new home. I sprung Nash from the shelter on Monday as we had an early start on tuesday. He spent his first night of freedom with us. Next morning up at the crack of dawn. Nash was travelling luxury-style in the TGV (French high-speed train) to the north east of France where his new family were waiting for him. I might add that he travelled with his own personal assistant! Dominique, one of our correspondents made the journey with him and handed him over to the on-spot correspondent, Valerie, who took charge of him till the next day when his new owner, Chantal, picked him up. A VERY happy ending. One day longer and he'd no longer be on this earth. A BIG thank you to SPACA, without whom there would be no Nash, and of course many thanks to all my friends in the association who helped get him to his new home. |

At long last, Nash's new mum - Chantal |
We are sad to say that Nash went to the Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday, July 9th, 2008. We can console ourselves in the fact that the last few months of his life were very happy and he knew that, at last, he was loved. Till we meet again, dear Nash, sweet dreams ....
